The vigils associated with the desaparecidos in Argentina, with the Mothers of Khavaran in Iran, with the Guatemalan genocide commemorations, and with the annual AIDS candlelight vigils from the 1980s onward all share three features: a fixed location, a recurrence (daily, weekly, annual), and the deliberate refusal of demand. The vigil’s claim is not “change this policy”; the claim is “we will be here, and we remember, and the channel cannot ignore us indefinitely.”
