Wake Up Madagascar and Razan'ny Vohibola — ICNC monograph
A 2020s case study by the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict covering two Malagasy civil-resistance campaigns: Wake Up Madagascar’s anti-corruption and ‘Citizens’ Wall’ actions (founded 2017 in Antananarivo by Ketakandriana Rafitoson and others), and Razan’ny Vohibola’s ritual-based forest defence around the Vohibola forest (a community association that grew out of a 2017 zebu-sacrifice ritual of roughly 4,000 indigenous people entrusting the forest to their ancestors). Both campaigns foregrounded defection by individual civil servants, judges and security officers as a way to weaken the regime’s pillars of support, and explicitly compared the contemporary situation to the 2002 civil-resistance movement that forced President Ratsiraka from office.
